AASU Sponsor’s Women’s History Roundtable Discussion

2 03 2009

AASU Sponsor’s Women’s History Roundtable Discussion

Upcoming Women’s History event to honor Women’s History month “Making it Happen: Women, Grassroots, and Change.” This event will be March 30th at 4:00 at AASU in the Compass Point Clubhouse. The Gender and Women’s Studies Program at AASU is hosting this important event to empower women who sometimes feel overwhelmed by the problems and issues that women face. A lot of women simply feel that there is nothing that they can do individually; that the problems we face are simply too large. We want to begin this discussion with a reading of Rebecca Walker’s article, “Becoming the Third Wave.” This article illustrates one woman’s voice making a difference by standing up for herself and all women. Organizations such as the Rape Crisis Center, Planned Parenthood, Safe Shelter, A Working Woman in Need, Sisters of Mercy, First City Network will be addressing the history of their organizations, the type of activism that they do within the organization and community to empower women, and the types of obstacles that are faced. In giving the history of each organization, we hope to highlight the fact that many grassroots organizations were founded and are sustained by the hard work and commitment of a very small number of women. For example, A Working Woman in Need was founded by the ideas and dreams of 1 woman.

From this roundtable discussion panel, we hope to show the power of women’s grassroots organization to effect change within our community. We also hope to form alliances with each organization present through internships with AASU’s Gender and Women’s Studies majors, and volunteer opportunities for each of the student organizations present such as the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance.

Immediately following the event, there will be a catered social.

On Thursday, March 5th, in honor of International Women’s Day, CARE will present A POWERFUL NOISE Live in 450 movie theatres nationwide for one night only. The event includes an inspiring documentary film about three women from different countries who fight HIV/AIDS, champion girls’ education and unite ethnically divided communities. Immediately following the film a town hall discussion with humanitarian experts Nicholas Kristof, Christy Turlington Burns and Dr. Helene Gayle will be broadcast live to all participating theatres.

I promise this will be an inspiring night. You’ll learn how you can help fight global poverty, while at the same time raising money for CARE. (Tickets cost around $15 a piece; if we sell out CARE will receive more than half a million dollars!) You’ll also get a better understanding of why I’m so passionate about and proud of the amazing development work that CARE does.
